Mr. Phileas Fogg lived, in 1872, at No. 7, Saville Row, Burlington Gardens, the house in which Sheridan died in 1814. He was one of the most noticeable members of the Reform Club, though he seemed to take care to do nothing which could attract attention. He was certainly never seen in any other place than the Reform Club, and he breakfasted and dined there at the hours which the club’s cook could never vary.

He was not known to have either wife or children, which may happen to some people; nor either relations or friends, which is a circumstance even more rare. He lived alone in his house in Saville Row, and no one could say they had ever seen him enter it. He was a man whom the years seemed to have chosen for their own—one of those quiet, methodical Englishmen who seem to pass through the world without troubling either it or themselves.
